"Fuck the Wall" - Berlin 1990
In February 1990, I spent a few days in Berlin photographing crocodiles in the Zoologischer Garten for a book.
The period I was there was about halfway between the date the wall was first breached and the end of the German Democratic Republic itself, a strange period steeped in the anticipation of change.
Still lit with searchlights and patrolled by East German guards, the wall was being eroded by people chipping away at it, even at 1:00am. As each layer was chipped away, new graffiti appeared on the rough surface underneath.
